  31.  ║    Two months ago, if you had suggested that someone was generating        ║
  32.  ║    gross sales in excess of one million dollars with a Bulletin Board      ║
  33.  ║    System (BBS) on their PC, I would have been more than a little sus-     ║
  34.  ║    picious.  Since I've returned from Denver, Colorado, site of the 1992   ║
  35.  ║    Online Networking Exposition & BBS Convention (ONE BBSCON), I know      ║
  36.  ║    that someone is really doing that - and more!                           ║
  37.  ║                                                                            ║
  38.  ║    From August 13-16, more than one thousand people from around the        ║
  39.  ║    globe poured into the Stouffer Concourse Hotel to share experiences     ║
  40.  ║    and information on the latest and greatest in the world of online       ║
  41.  ║    communications.  But, not all of them were sysops (system operators     ║
  42.  ║    of BBSs).  In addition to the customary media reps and software and     ║
  43.  ║    hardware vendors one would expect to find here, there were a number     ║
  44.  ║    of folks that had never run a BBS.  Many of them were specifically      ║
  45.  ║    looking for ways to start & operate a BBS for profit.  They were not    ║
  46.  ║    to be disappointed.                                                     ║

  50.  ... the magazine can be loaded as stand-alone or TSR to be called from within
  51.  other applications. The user interface is well polished and controlled with
  52.  keyboard and/or mouse - the hypertext windows makes it easy to navigate and
  53.  Undo, Search, Mark, Export are useful functions ... if things get to rough
  54.  there's always Help available ...
  55.  
  56.  The contents and aim of the magazine seems to fit a nice niche! I guess most
  57.  users have wondered why the PC allways seems to cost the user more money while
  58.  the promised returns mostly seem to dangle in the horizon ...
  59.  
  60.  Author - Rick Bryan - seems to be not inhibited by convention for or against
  61.  bbs's, commercial shareware/publicdomain distribution etc. ... and if you are
  62.  looking for new suggestions you can get some in this ASP program!

  64.  As a serious commercial magazine advertisements are of course offered for very
  65.  reasonable prizes affordable even for very small companies ....

  112.  Are you a programmer or do you sometimes have need for creating small menus
  113.  which you would like to look pretty, have just the necessary controls for key-
  114.  board/mouse and be able to design them as you want ???
  115.  
  116.  For example menus for disk catalogues, diskbased magazines, demo disks to be
  117.  sent out of the house - or if you are teacher which would like to make the use
  118.  of floppy disks easier for the pupils etc ... then you might want to take a
  119.  look at the little MenuMaker from Swiftware ...
  120.  
  121.  MM allows you to design the screens with all characters and colours of the
  122.  ANSI character set and with a little imagination the possibilities are almost
  123.  unlimited and makes small .COM-files of your menus so you only have to develop
  124.  the menu & screen as wanted, generate the comfile to the floppy and then you
  125.  go ...

  155.  You have of cause to design the main screen yourself - here I have painted the
  156.  upper line first by using F3 for displaying the ASCII chart and F4 for pasting
  157.  to the screen. After this line was finished the F5 to duplicate the line below
  158.  to fill then screen.

  160.  The shadowed menu box to be seen below the help screen is chosen between the
  161.  twelwe built-in boxes of different forms ... and the time display with Alt+F10
  162.  - left is only deciding what programs to start, colour of menubar etc.

  164.  The finished menu can be operated by mouse, arrow keys or function keys - and
  165.  as it's possible to make 4 submenu's the capacity will fullfill most needs for
  166.  operating floppys... and certainly also the end users!!!

  168.  The design and control was a bit akward for me in the start as I have worked
  169.  with this program layout before, but I found that after short time it was much
  170.  easier ... but even if I like to start testing before reading the manual I
  171.  found this time that it might be a good idea of skimming the docs and make
  172.  some notes ... it would be an nice feature if author could allow imports of
  173.  ANSI screens!

  175.  ShareWare for 10$ - do you need menus then MenuMakes is a MUST! (and a good

  182.  It would be unforgivable not to mention the new TheDraw which (in my eyes) is
  183.  without much competition in spite of many quality ANSI drawing programs for
  184.  drawing coloured screens - especially as it was my own fault first installing
  185.  my registered version now (was put in a drawer half a year ago and partly for-
  186.  gotten - and first now I found the shareware version included!
  187.  
  188.  Nothing much has changed in the interface and output facilities: still a lot
  189.  of facilities for screens to text files, batch files and all major programming
  190.  languages - except for a veryyyyy nice new feature: BIGFONTS ... and as you
  191.  can see around in the different chapters I like these to give a nice clear
  192.  intro to new chapters (by export & import via ASCII) ...
  193.  
  194.  ... and for those who say 'What on earth should I use such a program instead
  195.  of a real graphic paint program ....?
  196.  
  197.  - easy: the screens are small i size, can be shown easily on all types of mo-
  198.  nitors! ... but it might demand a little imagination to do beautifull things
  199.  with the limited ANSI/ASCII character set - as import of ANSI is possible and
  200.  there's a LOT of these flowing around YOU might have a chance too (take a look
  201.  at the colour pictures in the TEXT slideshow to see how the screen under edi-
